Whether the number four is a lucky one, is entirely dependent on the individual and the culture they come from. Many people have their own personal lucky numbers that they will tend to favour above others, whereas, in other instances, the luck of a number is suggested culturally.
The number four is found a lot in nature, for example, the four compass points, the four seasons, etc., and as such seems to many to be naturally lucky. Interestingly, The Pythagoreans called the number four the Tetrad and claimed that it was the “perfect number.”
In many cultures, finding a four leaf clover, or even just the imagery of a four-leaf clover is said to be lucky and is one of the most iconic pieces of lucky symbolism. Although this seems synonymous with Ireland, the German and Icelandic people also believe in the luck of four leaf clovers.
For many Native American people, the number four is a sacred one due to so much of nature being able to be divided into four sections; sunrise/dawn, noon, sunset/dusk, midnight, for example. The Zia Pueblo people use the Four Sacred Obligations (Develop a strong body; Develop a clear mind; Develop a pure spirit; Develop a devotion to the welfare of your people) as a way to live their lives.
On the other side, however, are the people who live in countries such as China, Japan, and Taiwan who are so averse to the number four that many of them suffer from Tetraphobia, which is a phobia of the number four. The main reason for this dislike of the number is that the word for four sounds similar to the word for death. Such is this superstition, many buildings, particularly apartments and hospitals will avoid using the number for floors or rooms, as it would be difficult to find anyone willing to use them, such is the fear of the number! They will even avoid giving four of anything, such as crockery, as a gift.
Sometimes, it’s the fact that the number four is an even number that renders it unlucky. For example, in Russia, you should avoid giving even numbers of flowers to anyone alive, as these are reserved only for funerals. Four roses for your Valentine’s date would be seen as very unlucky!
The New York lottery is a Win 4 game, and therefore, if you are the one who holds those four lucky digits, you would probably think that the number four was rather lucky to you too!
